Frequently asked

How does the monthly $1,000 freemium work?
Every month, the first $1,000 of customer payments your account processes is FREE — Tollwicket takes $0 of those. Once your customer revenue in a window crosses $1,000, Tollwicket takes 5% on the OVERAGE only — never on the first $1,000. The window resets to a new $1,000-free chunk next month. Your monthly window is anchored to the calendar day you received your very first customer payment — e.g. if your first customer ever paid you on the 11th, your free $1,000 resets on the 11th of every month.
If I make $2,000 in a month, do I owe Tollwicket $100 or $50?
$50. We take 5% of the OVERAGE above $1,000, which is $1,000 in this case — so 5% × $1,000 = $50. The first $1,000 is always free. Math: $999 → $0, $1,500 → $25, $2,000 → $50, $5,000 → $200, $10,000 → $450.
What if I make exactly $999 one month?
Tollwicket takes $0 that month. The 5% only ever applies to the portion above $1,000. If you stay under $1,000 every month indefinitely, you pay us nothing indefinitely — that's the deal.
How does the 5% on overage actually get collected?
Per invoice, automatically. When a customer invoice is finalized, we compute how much of it falls above the $1,000 monthly threshold and stamp that 5% onto the invoice as a Stripe application_fee. Stripe transfers the fee to our balance the moment your customer pays. The other 95% (minus Stripe's standard processing fee — see below) lands in your balance instantly. No end-of-month bill from us.
*What is the Stripe processing fee mentioned with the 5%?
Stripe charges its standard payment-processing fee on every transaction — typically 2.9% + ¢30 in the US, slightly different in other regions. This is paid BY YOU to Stripe directly, exactly as it would be if you used Stripe without Tollwicket. Tollwicket's 5% is on top of that. So on a $10 customer payment: customer pays $10, Stripe takes ~$0.59, Tollwicket takes $0.50, you net $8.91.
Is there a monthly minimum or annual contract?
No. You only pay when customers pay you. If a month goes by with zero customer payments, you owe zero. Cancel anytime by disconnecting Stripe in your dashboard.
Do I need my own Stripe account?
Yes. You either (a) sign up for one during Tollwicket onboarding via Stripe's hosted flow, or (b) connect an existing Stripe account. Either way, you're the merchant of record — customer payments land in your balance, not ours.
Whose name is on the customer's credit-card statement?
Yours. Stripe Checkout runs under your brand. The receipt comes from your business. Tollwicket is invisible to your customers.
What happens with refunds and chargebacks?
You handle them via your Stripe dashboard, the same as any Stripe-powered product. Stripe refunds the customer from your balance; Tollwicket refunds the 5% application fee from our balance. Net effect: you and we are both reverted as if the payment never happened.
Why 5% and not a flat fee?
Aligned incentives. We make money when you do — when your project takes off, we both win. When you're tinkering with zero revenue, we both wait. No awkward "you owe us $39 even though you made $0" emails.
I'm just experimenting. Will this cost me anything?
No. The free tier is genuinely free — no credit card required, no time limit. You only pay when a customer pays you. Build, ship, see if it works. We make money when you do.
Can I leave whenever I want?
Yes. Your customers, plans, and Stripe Prices all live on your own Stripe account — when you disconnect from Tollwicket, payments keep working. We don't hold anything hostage.
What about per-call usage billing?
The SDK decorator gates per-call pricing today (your tool refuses if quota exceeded). Stripe Meters integration for true usage-based recurring billing is on the roadmap. For now, subscriptions with quotas cover most use cases.
What's the BYOK alternative?
If you'd rather pay a flat monthly subscription (and skip the 5% per-payment cut), we offer a legacy BYOK path: paste a Stripe restricted key with hand-picked scopes, and we charge you a monthly tier fee based on your customer revenue ($0 / $39 / $99 / $229 / $449 / $799). Cliffs every tier boundary. See the disclosure below.
